Steady increase in number of enterprises

There has been a steady increase in the number of enterprises from 2001 to 2004. Most enterprises are sole proprietorships. These figures include all enterprises except public administration, agriculture, forestry and fishing.

Statistics from the Central Register of Establishments and Enterprises of Statistics Norway substantiate this development. The data registers by 1 January 2002 and 2003 are updated since the previous publishing. The enterprise dropouts have also been updated. Therefore, these figures are not identical with earlier published ones.

More enterprises but fewer employees

The number of enterprises has increased steadily from 1 January 2001 to 1 January 2004. But in the same period the number of employees in the enterprises has declined.

The portion of private limited companies of the total number of enterprises has decreased from 45 per cent in 2001 to 40 per cent in 2004. In the same period the share of sole proprietorships rose from 43 per cent to 50 per cent.

New established enterprises and enterprise closures

The number of new established enterprises decreased from 2002 to 2003. The portions of private limited companies and sole proprietorships of new established enterprises remained at respectively 24 and 68 per cent in both in 2002 and 2003.

Most enterprises in Oslo

All counties experienced an increase in the total number of enterprises from 1 January 2001 to 1 January 2004. The greatest number of enterprises is located in Oslo (18 per cent of all enterprises by 1 January 2004) and Akershus (11 per cent).

About 22 per cent of all new established enterprises, and 20-22 per cent of all enterprise closures in 2001-2003 are located in Oslo.
