Registered mortality of large carnivores. 1994/95- 2007/08

Quota hunting on lynx takes place in February and March. In 2008, hunting licences for 96 lynxes were issued and 86 were shot. The number of lynxes shot rose by 30 from the previous hunting year. With 26 animals, most lynxes were shot in the county of Nord-Trøndelag.

Many wolverines shot as nuisance

In total, 77 wolverines were shot or died of other causes, two less than in the previous hunting year. 49 of them were shot as nuisance. The majority of the wolverines shot as nuisance were shot in the northern part of Norway. With fourteen animals, the county of Finnmark had the largest number of felled wolverines. In total, 94 permissions to shoot wolverines under licence were issued, and 24 animals were shot. In the 2006/07 hunting year, 91 permissions were issued and 34 wolverines were shot.

Increased mortality of wolf and bear

13 bears were registered shot or died of other causes, compared with four in the previous hunting year. One bear were felled in self-defence, seven was felled as nuisance, one was killed by train and one died of other causes. In addition, three were shot under licence.

A total of five wolves were shot or died of other causes. One was shot as nuisance, one in self-defence, two were shot under licence and one was killed by train.

Birds of prey

In the previous hunting year 7 golden eagles, 26 white-tailed eagles and 9 goshawks were reported dead. In general, all reductions should be reported, but for various reasons this is not always done. The data for birds of prey in particular should be regarded as minimum figures.
