618 000 pupils in compulsory school system
This year marked a historical high number of pupils in the compulsory school system in Norway. But there are fewer children in primary schools than later years.
By autumn 2004 the number of pupils amounted to more than 618 000 in primary and lower secondary schools in Norway. The last peak year was 1979/80 when almost 594 000 pupils were registered. Since 1997/98, when the school-entrance age were lowered from 7 to 6 years of age, the total number of pupils has increased by about 50 000 pupils. Growth rates differ regionally.
