More pupils receive special education

As at autumn 2010, more than 50 000 pupils in ordinary primary and secondary schools received special education. This was an increase of 3 400 pupils from the previous school year.

Proportion of pupils who receive special education, by grade. 2010/11 Per cent

The proportion of pupils who received special education has also increased in the last few years. In 2007, 6 per cent of all pupils in ordinary schools received special education, compared with 8 per cent in 2010. The proportion of pupils who receive special education is higher at lower secondary than at primary level. Seven per cent of all pupils at primary and 11 per cent at lower secondary level received special education. A total of 68 per cent of all pupils who received special education were boys.

One out of four in Oslo received additional training in Norwegian

In the school year 2010/11, 43 900 speakers of minority languages received additional training in Norwegian; an increase of 2 300 from the previous school year. Nationwide, about 7 per cent of all pupils received this kind of education, but the corresponding figure in Oslo county was 24 per cent.

A total of 21 780 pupils received mother language education, bilingual education or adapted education, which was a decrease of 550 pupils from the previous school year.

Total number of pupils remains stable

In total, there were 614 020 pupils in ordinary schools as at 1 October 2010. The majority of all pupils in primary and lower secondary schools were enrolled in local authority schools; less than 3 per cent were enrolled in private schools.
