Long way to go before 40 per cent target is reached

In 2003, the Norwegian Government proposed a law to improve gender equality in publicly owned enterprises and public limited companies. The proposal contains rules regarding employer and employee representatives as well as deputy members of company boards. A possible implementation of the law was made dependent on the status as of 1 July 2005.

New figures from Statistics Norway show that at 1 July 2005, 17 per cent of the public limited companies fulfilled the law's requirement regarding employer representatives, while 45 per cent of the public limited companies fulfilled the requirement regarding employee representatives. 18 per cent of the enterprises which have to fulfil requirements regarding both employer and employee representatives fulfilled both requirements.
