Increase in foundations’ assets

Norwegian foundations had NOK 106 billion in assets in 2012, which was an increase of 10 per cent from 2011.

Operating expenses for the foundations totalled NOK 33 billion in 2012. Net profit amounted to NOK 4.5 billion in the same year. Operating expenses fell by 4.6 per cent from 2011, while operating profit saw a major increase from NOK 295 million.

The foundations financed 71 per cent of their assets by equity and 29 per cent by debt. Equity ratio has been rising since 2010.

Non-profit foundations

There were about 7 500 registered foundations in 2012, almost 2 900 of which were non-profit and were worth NOK 35.6 billion, which was 5.6 per cent more than the NOK 33.7 billion in 2011. Operating expenses for non-profit foundations stood at NOK 27.1 billion in 2012, up 5.0 per cent from 2011. Net profit increased from NOK 744 million in 2011 to NOK 1.2 billion in 2012.

The non-profit foundations acquired 54 per cent of their assets by equity finance and 46 per cent by debt finance. Equity ratio remained the same as in 2011.
