Foundations worth NOK 84 billion

Norwegian non-financial foundations had a total of NOK 84 billion in assets in 2010 and NOK 75 billion in 2009.

The foundations financed almost two thirds of the assets by equity and one third by debt. This shows that equity ratio, which was 66 per cent in 2010, was quite high. In 2009, equity ratio was about 64 per cent.

In the 2010 fiscal year, 2 962 foundations, or about half of the foundations, were non-profit. They had assets totalling NOK 33 billion in 2010 and NOK 32 billion in 2009.

Foundations

A foundation is founded when, by a will, endowment, or other legal arrangement, property is made available for a certain social, charitable, economic, educational, humanitarian, or other purpose. Foundations also include privately established independent funds, bodies and legacies.

 

About the statistical basis

Accounting statistics for non-financial foundations are based on annual reports obtained from the Register of Company Accounts in Brønnøysund. The statistics for 2010 are based on annual reports from 7 579 foundations.
