Solid year for transportation

There was an increase of 730 enterprises in the industry divisions of land, water and air transport in 2007. Employment increased by 5.2 per cent while turnover went up by 8.4 per cent from 2006. There were 18 742 enterprises in 2007.

The industry divisions of land, water and air transport consist of the industry groups railway transport, other land transport, sea- and coastal water transport, inland water transport, scheduled air transport, and non-scheduled air transport. Land transport had the highest employment with 69 060 people while air transport had the lowest with 7 338 people in 2007. Water transport had the highest turnover with NOK 126.3 billion while air transport had the lowest turnover with NOK 22.1 billion in 2007.

Strong growth in employment and turnover for transportation on land (by road).

There were 16 851 enterprises within the land transportation business area in 2007, an increase of 600 compared with the year before. Employment increased with 3 382 to a total of 69 060, while turnover grew by 12.5 per cent to NOK 62.9 billion. Railroad transport increased its turnover with 7.7 per cent to NOK 4.6 billion, while bus transport increased its turnover with a formidable 14.3 per cent to NOK 8.9 billion. Employment in the area cargo transport by road went up by 1 919 people compared with the previous year, while turnover increased with 13.2 per cent to NOK 38.9 billion. Land transport collectively had 16 840 enterprises in 2007, up by 599 from the year before. The number of employees increased by 3 322 and the turnover increased with NOK 6.6 billion to NOK 58.3 billion, which is equal to a growth of 12.8 per cent compared with the same period the previous year.

Biggest growth in employment within sea transport

The number of enterprises within sea and air transport were 1 891 in 2007. Sea transport employed 32 662 persons and had turnover of NOK 148.4 billion. Compared with 2006, employment increased with 5.1 per cent and turnover with 6.7 per cent. Sea transport was the largest business area with 1 791 companies, 25 324 employees and a turnover of NOK 126.3 billion. Within sea transportation the employment increased with 1 430 people from 2006, an increase of 5.9 per cent, while 173 employees were added within air transport, an increase of 2.4 per cent in the same period. Turnover increased in sea transport by NOK 7.0 billion, up 5.9 per cent from 2006, while the same number for air transport was NOK 2.3 billion, a growth of 11.5 per cent.

12 billion more in transport services

Transport services consisted of 3 811 enterprises in 2007 with 32 578 employees and a turnover of NOK 104.4 billion. Services connected to transportation include loading-/unloading, management of cargo stations and toll stations (toll roads), management of harbour and docks, travel agencies and tourist offices and spedition (handling customs etc). Turnover increased with NOK 11.9 billion, a growth of 12.9 per cent, while employment increased with 1 638 persons, which means a growth of 5.3 per cent.

This industry group has experienced a considerable growth in the number of companies over the last few years. In 2006 there were 1 512 companies compared with 1 698 at the end of 2007. This is a growth of 12.3 per cent. Turnover was NOK 31.4 billion in 2007, up 8.7 per cent from 2006. Employment has increased steadily and the industry employed approximately 6 000 people in 2007, an increase of 2.6 per cent from the previous year.

Telecommunications increased turnover by NOK 3 billion

The turnover for enterprises in telecommunications increased from NOK 60.8 billion in 2006 to NOK 63.9 billion in 2007, an increase of 5 per cent. At the same time the number of enterprises rose by 4.3 per cent and employment by 1.2 per cent. Enterprises in post and courier activities employed 25 567 persons in 2007, an increase of 1.2 per cent from 2006. The turnover in this industry group rose by 4.4 per cent to NOK 15.4 billion.

The preliminary figures for number of enterprises, turnover and employment are published while data are still being revised and may therefore deviate somewhat from final figures published at a later date. While preliminary figures are published on the enterprise level only, final figures are published on both the enterprise level and the local kind-of-activity unit level.
