283 million tonnes of goods on wheels

Norwegian lorries carried 283 million tonnes in Norway and abroad in 2015. Transport performance amounted to 23 billion tonne-kilometres, while vehicle-kilometres in total were 2.2 billion kilometres. Eighty-eight per cent of the total transport performance was transport within Norway.

Lorries registered in Norway transported 279 million tonnes of goods in Norway in 2015, while 4.7 million tonnes were transported abroad. This was 3.4 and 6.0 per cent more than in 2014 respectively.

Domestic transport of gravel

Of the goods transported in Norway, transport of gravel etc. constituted 165 million tonnes or 59 per cent. Measured in tonne-kilometres the share was 24.6 per cent. Transport of mixed cargo accounted for 34 per cent of the total tonne-kilometres.

Empty kilometres make up a quarter

The total vehicle-kilometres driven in Norway in 2015 was 2 billion, compared to 169 million kilometres in connection with import and export. The rate of empty kilometres for national transport was 24.6 per cent in 2015. This is a small decrease from 26.7 per cent in 2014. The rate for international transport is always lower, and constituted 20.3 per cent in 2015.

Average length of haul increased for public haulage

The average length of haul per tonne for national transport was 73.5 kilometres per tonne in 2015, compared to 66.2 in 2014.

Increase in transport work

The transport performance for national transport as a whole increased from 19.1 billion tonne- kilometres in 2014 to 20.5 billion in 2015.

Increase in 4th quarter

The transport performance of Norwegian lorries domestically and abroad was 6.1 billion tonne-kilometres in the 4th quarter of 2015; a 9.9 per cent increase from the corresponding quarter in 2014. Tonnage transported increased by 2.0 per cent in the same period. 

Improvements in methodsOpen and readClose

As of the 3rd quarter 2015, the road goods transport survey has seen a few changes in the statistical methods used. As a consequence, the results for international transport are not directly comparable to earlier figures, but the main outlines of the transport performances can still be followed back to the survey's origin in 1963.
