Increased mass transport on Norwegian roads

Mass transport increased by 11 per cent in 2014. Norwegian lorries with a carrying capacity of 3.5 tonnes or more shipped nearly 175 million tonnes of gravel, sand, soil etc. on Norwegian roads in 2014.

Mass transport constituted 60.7 per cent of the total transport volume in 2014. The corresponding proportion for transport performance was 23.4 per cent. Mass transport that is usually performed over short distances was significantly lower when measured in tonne kilometres than tonnes transported. Number of tonne kilometres transported for cargo other goods dominated transport performance because the goods are transported farther.

Increased transport performance in 2014

Norwegian lorries transported a total of 293.2 million tonnes of freight on trips in Norway and abroad in 2014. This is 8.1 per cent more than in 2013. A total of 1.5 billion kilometres was covered with cargo domestically; almost the same distance as the previous year. On average, every tonne was transported 66.1 kilometres, which is 2.9 kilometres shorter than in 2013. Transport performance carried out domestically was 19 billion tonne kilometres; an increase of 3.8 per cent compared with 2013.

Average mileage per tonne for international trips was 503.5 kilometres in 2014; 25.2 kilometres shorter than in 2013. A total of 184.1 million kilometres were covered abroad in 2014; a decrease of 14 per cent. The transport performance internationally decreased by 13.7 per cent.

Since 2010, transport performance in all national and international goods transport has increased by 9.3 per cent. Transport performance domestically rose in this period by 16.5 per cent, and transport volume increased by 10.4 per cent.

Increased distance covered with and without cargo

Norwegian lorries drove a total of 2.0 billion kilometres in Norway in 2014. This is an increase of 2.1 per cent or 41.7 million kilometres since 2013. Of the total mileage, 534.8 million kilometres were driven without a load, so-called empty driving. Consequently, the empty driving percentage was 26.7, which was 1.5 percentage points higher than in 2013. The rate of empty running of own transport was 29.8 per cent in 2014, which is 5.1 percentage points higher than for hire transport.

Less hire transport

Lorries for hire transport carried a total of 168.7 million tonnes of goods in 2014. This accounted for 57.5 per cent of the total tonnage; a decrease from 66.1 per cent in 2013. The share of hire transport of the total transport performance was 77.0 per cent. This is 3.3 percentage points less than in 2013.

Reduced transport work in 4th quarter

In total, 74.1 million tonnes of goods were transported by Norwegian lorries in the 4th quarter of 2014. Of this, 32.8 million tonnes were transported by own transport. This is 3.6 million tonnes, or 12.3 per cent more than in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.

Transport performance carried out by Norwegian lorries in the 4th quarter of 2014 amounted to 5.5 billion tonne kilometres. A total of 1.2 billion of this was transported by own transport; an increase of 6.2 per cent, or 71.0 million tonne kilometres, compared to the 4th quarter of 2013.
