Road goods transport by Norwegian lorries, Q4 2006

The transport performance of Norwegian lorries on domestic roads was 15.3 billion tonne-kilometres in 2006. This is a decrease of 32 million tonne-kilometres from 2005.

The total distance covered by Norwegian lorries on domestic roads was 1.6 billion kilometres, of which 1.2 billion kilometres were by loaded lorries. This means that the rate of empty kilometres was 26.6. In 2005, 25.8 per cent of the covered distance was by empty lorries.

More transport of gravel, sand, cement etc.

The rise in the rate of empty kilometres may be attributed to the type of goods transported. Gravel, sand, stone, cement and other compounds are by far the largest commodity group. In 2006, transport of such goods accounted for 55 per cent of transport by lorries compared with 51 per cent in 2005. This type of transport naturally has a 50 per cent rate of empty kilometres.

Regardless of type of commodity, every tonne of goods in national transport was transported 62.5 kilometres in 2006. This is 1.3 kilometres shorter than in 2005.

International transport

Norwegian lorries carried 6 million tonnes of goods abroad in 2006. A total of 227.6 million kilometres were covered, of which 195.3 million kilometres were by loaded lorries. The transport performance amounted to 4 billon tonne-kilometres. International transport had a rate of empty kilometres of 14.2 and every tonne of goods was transported 669 kilometres on average.
