Lorry transport continues to grow

Norwegian lorries carried a total of 263.9 million tonnes of goods on their national transports during 2007. This is 7.6 per cent more than in 2006. Each tonne was on average transported 3.1 kilometres shorter than in 2006. The total covered distance increased by 2.3 per cent.

(Corrected 3 July 2008)

Transport performance. National transports. Hire/reward or own account. 2007

The domestic transport performance by Norwegian lorries in 2007 amounted to 15.7 tonne kilometres. Of this, 77.4 per cent was carried out by lorries driving for hire or reward and 22.6 per cent was carried out by lorries working on own account.

More transport on own account

Lorries driving for hire or reward made a domestic transport performance of 12.1 billion tonne kilometres in 2007, against 12.4 billion tonne kilometres the year before. This is a drop of 2 per cent. Transport on own account, on the other hand, rose by 21 per cent, from 2.9 to 3.5 billion tonne kilometres. The transport on own account’s share of the total Norwegian transport performance thus saw a jump from 19.1 per cent in 2006 to 22.6 per cent in 2007.

Lorries performing transport for hire or reward have on average longer transport distances than lorries performing transport on own account. In 2007 the average length of carriage per tonne was 34.7 kilometres for transport on own account and 74.9 kilometres for transporters performing the work on duty for someone else.

Length of carriage. National transports. 2003-2007

In total, Norwegian lorries covered 1.6 billion kilometres inside Norway during 2007. This is 37.8 million kilometres or 2.3 per cent more than the year before. For 1.2 billon kilometres of the distance covered, the lorries were loaded. This gives a rate of empty kilometres of 27 per cent.

More but shorter journeys abroad

Norwegian lorries transported in total 6.6 billion tonnes of goods abroad during 2007, 8.9 per cent more than in 2006. The distance covered by Norwegian lorries in international transports was 239.6 million kilometres, of which the lorries were loaded for 197.3 million kilometres. Each tonne of goods was transported shorter than in 2006 on average, and the international transport performance was 3 per cent lower in 2007 than the year before.

During the fourth quarter of 2007, 70.1 million tonnes of goods were transported inside Norway and 158.3 thousand tonnes were transported abroad by Norwegian lorries. This is an increase of 7.8 and 9.9 per cent, respectively. The transport performance increased by 3.7 per cent on national journeys, but decreased by 9.3 per cent on international journeys.
