In January 2013, social networks such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Xing, Viadeo and Yammer were used by 45 per cent of all enterprises with at least 10 persons employed. Multimedia content sharing websites such as YouTube, Flickr, Picasa and SlideShare were used by 12 per cent of enterprises. Nine per cent of enterprises use blogs or microblogs such as Twitter and Present.ly, and 5 per cent use Wiki-based knowledge sharing tools. All of the social media are being used more by larger enterprises than smaller ones and the use is most developed within the information and communication industry.

Thirty-one per cent use social media to market products and develop the enterprise’s image. Twenty-four per cent use them to recruit employees and 22 per cent to obtain or respond to customer opinions, reviews or questions.

Only 18 per cent of all enterprises have a formal policy for using social media. This indicates that most enterprises leave the development of social media practices to employees, with no formal guidelines.

Fixed and fast broadband still on the increase

The share of fixed Internet connections with a transmission capacity of at least 2 Mbit/s increased to 80 per cent in January 2013, compared to 77 per cent in January 2012. Twenty-five per cent of all enterprises have fixed broadband with a transmission capacity of at least 30 Mbit/s. Ninety-two per cent of enterprises have a broadband connection and 89 per cent a fixed broadband connection.

In the Norwegian business sector, the use of mobile broadband has increased rapidly in recent last years. However, from 2012 to 2013 the development stalled.

Fifty-three per cent of enterprises have a mobile broadband connection in 2013; a reduction from 54 per cent last year. Three per cent have a mobile broadband connection only - the same as last year.

Sales of goods or services via the enterprise’s website have fallen from 38 per cent in 2011 to 28 per cent in 2012. The share of enterprises with EDI sales is stable at 7 per cent.
