Decline in prices

The 12-month rate, May 2001 - May 2002, decreased slightly this month, after an increase the previous three months. This development can be seen both for the total index, oil and gas extraction and manufacturing, mining and quarrying.

From May last year to May this year the total index fell 7.6 per cent. Prices within oil and gas extraction fell 13.4 per cent, manufacturing, mining and quarrying, about 4 per cent, and electricity prices roughly 11 per cent.

Manufacturing: 12-month rate down

The 12-month rate for manufacturing went from a negative 2.9 per cent in April to a negative 4 per cent in May. The figures for refined petroleum products were -13.7 and -19.2 per cent, respectively. Another group, basic metals, had about 13 per cent lower prices than last year, compared with 8.5 per cent lower prices in April. The most noticeable price decline within this group came from non-ferrous metals. The negative development can also be seen for pulp, paper and paper products, and for food products, beverages and tobacco.
