Increase in first-hand prices

Price index of first-hand domestic sales increased by 1.4 per cent from July to August. Electricity contributes to the continuing upward trend in the index with an increase of 24.2 per cent over the last month. In the index grouping that concerns mineral fuels, lubricants and related material the increase was 6.7 per cent in total. For all other main groupings there were only slight changes compared to the previous month.

Electricity prices grew from July to August 2006. A combination of different factors contributed to this increase; low water reservoir levels in Norway, low production in Sweden and high electricity consumption by the Norwegian industry. After the cease-fire in Lebanon prices of petroleum (Brent Blend) went down to a level similar of that registered in the beginning of April or end of March this year.

Food prices decreased 0.3 per cent from July to August. The price index concerning crude materials decreased 0.5 per cent as well, even though the prices on wood and lumber increased 0.5 per cent. For chemical products the increase was of 1 per cent. The development in this grouping is partly due to a 6.9 per cent increase for organic chemicals, while other goods have seen only small changes in prices compared to the previous month. Prices on machinery and transport equipment decreased by 0.2 while miscellaneous manufactured articles increased 0.1 per cent.

The 12-month rate, August 2005 to August 2006: Up 6.9 per cent

Food prices increased 6.3 per cent compared to the same period of last year. The prices of fish, and food for animals increased by 14.2 and 19.2 per cent respectively. Cereal prices have decreased over the same period, by 1.8 per cent. The group concerning miscellaneous manufactured products have seen falling prices. Furniture and parts decreased by 2.3 per cent, while articles of apparel increased 6.3 per cent from August 2005 to August 2006
