Digital use in the academic and special libraries is increasing. In 2014, almost 24.2 million documents were downloaded. This represents an increase of 8.7 per cent compared to the previous year, not including the National Library.

Digitalisation has been an ongoing process for several years in the academic and special libraries in Norway. Downloads from full text databases have increased by 20 per cent from 2013 to 2014. At the same time, downloads from the institution archives declined by 6.5 per cent.
A total of 20.6 million documents were downloaded from the academic and special libraries excluding the National Library. In 2013, downloaded documents totalled 18.9 million. The National Library did not register downloads in 2013. Including the National Library, downloads amounted to 24.2 million in 2014.
Fewer loans
In 2014, a total of 1.8 million books and other physical library documents were borrowed from the academic and special libraries; a decline of 12.4 per cent compared to 2013. In the period 2013 to 2014, it is clear that the digital use increased and the traditional use in the libraries fell.
Rise in media expenses
In 2014, the expenses for media purchases in the academic and research libraries had a growth of 11 per cent compared to 2013. The total for physical and digital purchases amounted to NOK 462 million in 2014.
Fewer man-years
A total staff of 1 637 man-years worked in the academic and research libraries nationwide in 2014. In 2013, the corresponding figure was 1 637; a decline of 0.5 per cent.
The population in 2014 covers a total of 179 academic and special libraries.
