More forest planting

In 2011, plants covering a total of 13 200 hectares were planted, which is an increase of 1 400 hectares from the previous year. A total of 23 million forest plants were planted.

Although there was a rise last year, the area planted in 2011 was at the same level as the yearly average in the period 2007-2009.

Most planting in Hedmark and Oppland

Hedmark and Oppland were the counties where most forest area was planted, and 38 per cent of all forest planting in Norway was carried out here. In total, around 2 500 hectares were planted in each of the counties.

Almost unaltered tending of young stands and more scarification

In total, 27 100 hectares of young forest were tended in 2011; 180 hectares less than the previous year.

A total of 5 100 hectares were scarificated in 2011; an increase of 770 hectares from 2010.

NOK 249 million invested

In total, NOK 249 million was invested in silviculture in 2011, of which NOK 116 million was invested in forest planting and NOK 94 million in tending. The remaining amount was invested in scarification, clearing, fertilizing and similar work. Government subsidies accounted for NOK 53 million of the costs.

Tending of young stands

Tending of young stands consists of clearing, weed combating and juvenile spacing - all work that is done in connection with the establishment of new forest.

Scarification

Scarification involves removal of vegetation in spots to improve conditions for natural regeneration and growth of forest plants.
