Forest planting is the biggest single investment within silviculture. The total costs for new planting and supplementary planting amounted to NOK 139,3 million in 2001.

Most planting in Oppland County

Most forest area were planted in Oppland County. Totally 30 400 decares were planted in this county, 1 000 decares more than in Hedmark County. Hedmark, on the other hand, had the biggest proportion of area for scarification. The main purpose with scarification is to makes god conditions for natural regeneration and new-planted forest. 49 per cent of the scarification was carried out in Hedmark, the largest timber county in Norway. See Commercial roundwood removals . In the entire country 68 000 decares were scarificated in 2001. The number of decares declined with 13 per cent from the previously year.

Less spraying

The use of eradicants in forestry has dropped in recent years. The area sprayed went down from 17 2000 decares in 2000 to 11 400 decares in 2001. By comparison, 58 300 decares were sprayed in 1991.There are many reasons for the decline: greater environmental awareness, restrictions on use and reduced subsidies.

A total of 346 500 decares were cleared in 2001, at a cost of NOK 83 million.

Stable for drainage

There has been a sharp decline in drainage last years. From 1991 the drainage area decreased from 29 900 decares to 4 000 decares the last to years. 56 per cent of all drained areas were carried out in Nord-Trøndelag.
