Good harvest of grass

As a result of a growing season with sufficient rain the farmers achieved good yields of fodder crops in 2001. The quality of the yields varied, especially the quality of the yield from the first harvesting of grass.

The total yield of all meadows for mowing was about 2.9 million tonnes, converted by dry matter into hay. This is almost the same as the year before, and correspond to a per decare yield of 578 kilos of hay.

By the first harvesting, 53 per cent of the harvested area of meadows for mowing was laid into silage, whereas 37 per cent was harvested as round bales. Corresponding figures for the later harvesting were 49 and 46 per cent respectively. The grass from 8 per cent of the first harvesting was dried as hay, while 2 per cent was fed fresh. For later harvesting 1 per cent was harvested as hay, while 4 per cent was fed fresh.

Crops of green fodder and silage

Green fodder and silage was grown on 266 100 decares in 2001, of which the rye-grass covered 58 per cent and grain for green fodder and silage covered 39 per cent. Total yield of green fodder and silage was 653 300 tonnes, compared with 725 500 tonnes the year before.

1.2 million tonnes of grain

The total grain production in 2001 was 1.2 million tonnes, compared with 1.3 million tonnes in 2000. The average decare yield of grain was 375 kilos. For further information about yield of grain and oil seeds, please see Grain and oil seeds, area and production .
