5 per cent fall in value added

A fall in the prices for crude oil and natural gas in 2014 contributed to a decrease of almost 5 per cent in the production value in the extraction and related services industries. Combined with a decrease of 2 per cent in the intermediate consumption, this led to a 5 per cent decrease in the value added compared to 2013.

The extraction and related services in Norway consist of the extraction of crude oil and natural gas, pipeline transport and support activities for petroleum and natural gas extraction. The production value for these three industries amounted to NOK 771 billion in 2014; a decrease of almost 5 per cent of NOK 808 billion from the previous year. The intermediate consumption showed a decrease of 2 per cent in the same period and amounted to NOK 155 billion in 2014. This resulted in a value added of NOK 616 billion in 2014, which is 5 per cent lower than in 2013.

Fall in crude oil and gas prices

The price fall in 2014 contributed to a decrease of 5 per cent in the production value in the extraction industry (incl. pipeline transport) compared to 2013. The production value ended up at NOK 637 billion. The production of natural gas (measured in sm3) was almost unchanged, while the production of crude oil increased by 3 per cent, which offset the price fall.

The intermediate consumption decreased by 2 per cent from 2013 to 2014 and amounted to NOK 70 billion. This resulted in a value added of NOK 576 billion in 2014; a decrease of almost 6 per cent from 2013.

Slight decrease in the extraction-related service industry

The extraction-related services had a marginal decrease of 1 per cent from 2013 to 2014, measured in value added, which totalled almost NOK 49 billion. The production value was NOK 134 in 2014; a slight decrease of 1 per cent compared to 2013. The intermediate consumption had a similar decrease in 2014.

Updated figures for 2013 and preliminary figures for 2014

The figures presented for 2013 are final figures, while the figures for 2014 are preliminary. The production value of the extraction industry for mainland Norway in 2013 was adjusted upwards to 11 per cent due to the revision of the data. The intermediate consumption was adjusted downwards to a similar size. The new price of natural gas caused a 5 per cent decrease in the production value in the Norwegian continental shelf.

There were marginal changes for the extraction-related services when comparing the preliminary figures with the final figures.

Corrections to changes in calculationsOpen and readClose

The methodology for extraction and pipeline transport changed in 2012. Part of the change was incorrect, and this has been corrected for 2012 and 2013 figures. See ‘About the statistics’ for more details.
