Small growth for new dwellings

After a period of decline followed by a flattening out, seasonally-adjusted figures show signs of slight growth in the number of new dwellings in recent months.

The number of new dwelling permits increased by 4 per cent from September to October, according to seasonally-adjusted figures.

However, hitherto this year, there have been building starts for almost 24 700 new dwellings. This is a decrease of 1 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Building has started on around 7.8 million square metres of utility floor space hitherto this year. This is almost 3 per cent less than in the corresponding period last year.

Building starts in the industrial sector decreased by almost 9 per cent compared with January-October 2012. Holiday properties (cottages), private garages and other non-industrial activity decreased by 2.4 per cent.

Figures for buildings in the building statistics rely on dates for when permits are registered by the municipality in the data register (Matrikkelen). A building permit does not always mean that construction will be started at once. Especially in low conjunctures it might be that construction projects are not realised, or may be postponed after a building permit has been granted. When the building activity trend turns from a low to a high level, and vice versa, this could affect the interpretation of the statistics.
