Small changes in building activity

Around 5.2 million square metres of utility floor space have been given building starts hitherto this year. This is an increase of 1.3 per cent compared with the same period last year.

A total of 16 400 new dwellings were given building starts in January-July; this is the same level as last year. The underlying trend has however been pointing downwards in recent months.

Building starts in the industrial sector increased by 1.3 per cent compared with January-July 2012. Holiday properties (cottages), private garages and other non-industrial activity decreased by 4.1 per cent.
