Huge drop in new buildings
Building activity, measured in total utility floor space started, fell by 27 per cent during the first nine months of 2009 compared with the corresponding period in 2008.
A total of 14 158 dwelling starts were registered during the first nine months of 2009. This is 25.5 per cent fewer dwelling starts compared with the same period in 2008.
Registered utility floor space starts for industrial and public sector buildings decreased by 30.6 per cent in the period January-September 2009 compared with the same period in 2008.
Utility floor space started for holiday houses and residential garages went down by 24 per cent compared with the corresponding period last year.
