Broad decrease in building starts

During the first four months of 2009, building activity measured in total utility floor space started fell by 23.1 per cent compared with the corresponding period in 2008.

A total of 6 607 dwelling starts were registered during the first four months of 2009. This is 20.1 per cent fewer dwelling starts compared with the same period in 2008. Registered utility floor space starts for industrial and public sector buildings decreased by 23.0 per cent in the period January-April 2009 compared with the same period last year. Utility floor space started for holiday houses and residential garages went down by 26.0 per cent compared with January to April 2008.

Conversion to a new property register

The low level of building starts in Oslo in April 2009 is one of the factors influenced by the fact that Oslo was transferred from the Ground Parcel, Address and Building Register (GAB) to the new property register, Matrikkelen.
