New buildings down 19 per cent

During the first three months of 2009, building activity measured by total utility floor space started, fell by 18.9 per cent compared with the corresponding period in 2008.

Started non-residential utility floor space. Unadjusted and trend. January 1995-March 2009

Number of dwellings started. Unadjusted and trend. January 1995-March 2009

A total of 5 427 dwelling starts were registered in the first quarter of 2009, which is 1 067 fewer than in the first quarter last year and 2 841 fewer compared with the same period in 2007.

Registered utility floor space starts for industrial and public sector buildings decreased by 19.4 per cent during the first three months of 2009 compared with the same period last year. Utility floor space started for holiday houses and residential garages during this period went down by 20.9 per cent compared with January to March 2008.

Increasing delay in the registration of building starts

The average monthly registration delay for buildings started increased in 2008. This means that a larger share of older building projects are registered as started in cadastre. The decreasing trend may therefore be greater than what is shown by the building statistics. In addition, projects that have been registered as started may have been postponed for an indefinite time due to a fall in demand.
