Dwelling-starts dominated by flats

Final figures show that 33 314 dwellings were started during 2006, an increase of 5.4 per cent compared to 2005. As much as 48.0 per cent of these were flats in multi-dwelling buildings.

Dwellings in multi-dwelling buildings also had the largest increase compared to 2005, up 17.1 per cent. Starting of dwellings in house with two dwellings increased by 9.6 per cent, while detached houses has had a reduction of 7.4 per cent compared to the previous year.

Most flats in Oslo

In Oslo 84.8 per cent of all dwelling starts in 2006 were flats in multi-dwelling buildings, while only 5.1 per cent of the dwellings constructed in Oslo were detached houses. Aust-Agder has the highest share of started detached houses with48.8 per cent and the lowest share of new flats in multi-dwelling buildings with 15.3 per cent.

Building activity highest in Rogaland

A total of 9 050 000 square meter of utility floor space was started during 2006, an increase of 7.1 per cent compared to 2005. Of this 4 070 000 square metre were started for dwellings and 4 980 000 square metre were started for other purposes. Most floor space is registered started in Rogaland, with a total of 1 142 000 square metres. Rogaland is also the county with most dwellings started, 4 523 dwellings during 2006.

Strong growth in dwelling-starts in Sweden

Preliminary figures from Statistics Sweden show that 44 400 dwellings were started in Sweden during 2006 - an increase of 39 per cent compared to 2005. The number of started dwellings pr 1 000 inhabitants is 4.9 in Sweden against 7.1 in Norway.
