Rise in highly skilled occupations

Despite the decrease in employment from 2008 to 2009, employed persons among Professionals rose. The decrease was largest among Technicians and associate professionals and Plant and machine operators and assemblers, according to Statistics Norway’s Labour Force Survey.

From 2008 to 2009, total employment decreased by 16 000 persons. Professionals, however, increased their employment by 25 000 persons. Thirteen per cent of all employed persons were employed as Professionals in 2009. Within these highly skilled occupations the employment had the largest rise for Public service administrative professionals and Health professionals.

The standard classification of occupations is divided into 10 major groups:

1 Legislators, senior officials and managers (no skill requirements)

2 Professionals (skill requirements of 4 or more years of university or college)

3 Technicians and associate professionals (skill requirements of 1-3 years of university or college)

4 Clerks (skill requirement of secondary school)

5 Service workers and shop and market sales workers (skill requirement of secondary school)

6 Agricultural, forestry and fishery workers (skill requirement of secondary school)

7 Craft and related trades workers (skill requirement of secondary school)

8 Plant and machine operators and assemblers (skill requirement of secondary school)

9 Elementary occupations (no skill requirements)
