Increase in employment in 15 counties

Between the 4th quarter of 2011 and the 4th quarter of 2012 the number of employed persons increased by 1.1 per cent.

1The figures for Oslo in the 4th quarter of 2012 are too low by an estimated 2 500-3 500. This is due to insufficient reporting to The Central Register of Employers and Employees, which is one of the data sources for the employment statistics.

Rogaland and Sør-Trøndelag had the highest increase with 2.0 per cent each. Four counties had a decrease in employment. Nordland had the largest decrease with 0.4 per cent.

Finnmark with largest growth in the secondary industries

For Norway as a whole, employment in the secondary industries increased by 2.2 per cent between 2011 and 2012. Fifteen out of 19 counties had an increase in these industries. Finnmark, Rogaland and Oslo had the largest increases, with 7.8, 4.4 and 3.5 per cent respectively. Employment in Telemark decreased by 2.8 per cent.

Within the secondary industries, extraction of oil and gas had the highest increase.

Increase in the tertiary industries in most counties

Employment in the tertiary industries increased by 0.9 per cent between 2011 and 2012. Nord-Trøndelag and Sør-Trøndelag had the highest increases, with 2.5 and 2.0 per cent respectively, while Finnmark had the largest decrease with 1.1 per cent. Vest-Agder, Nordland and Sogn og Fjordane also had a decrease in employment in the tertiary industries.

Retail trade is the largest industry of the tertiary industries and had a decrease in employment of 1.0 per cent. The other large industries; education and human health activities, only had small changes.

Decrease in employment in primary industries

For Norway as a whole, employment in the primary industries decreased by 0.4 per cent. Figures between the counties vary considerably due to the greater uncertainty in the data on self-employed persons than for employees.

Due to a new occupational classification and new sector code, figures by occupation and sector will be released later this year.

The register-based employment statistics are published once a year. In addition to these figures there are separate statistics releases with more detailed figures for health care personnel on 12 June, for employed persons in municipal activities on 17 June, for immigrants on 20 June and employment among short-term immigrants on 25 June.
