Monthly earnings for teachers up NOK 2,700

Average monthly earnings were NOK 28,800 for full-time employees in publicly maintained schools per 1 October 2002, an increase of NOK 2,700 or 10.5 per cent from the corresponding month in 2001.

About one third of all employees work in primary schools. Their monthly earnings averaged at NOK 27,900, an increase of 11.3 per cent (NOK 2,800) from the previous year.

The employees in upper secondary schools had the highest wages: NOK 30,600, which is an increase of 9.8 per cent (NOK 2,700).

For comparison: Those that work in combined primary and lower secondary schools had average monthly earnings of NOK 28,100, whereas employees in lower secondary schools had monthly earnings of NOK 28,600. These figures correspond to increases of 10.5 and 10.4 per cent, respectively.

Teachers with university degree and teachers

About two thirds of full-time employees in publicly maintained schools are teachers with university degree with advancement or teachers with university degree. Average monthly earnings for these two groups were NOK 28,800 and NOK 27,300, respectively. These figures corresponded to an increase of NOK 2,600 for both groups, or 10.1 and 10.5 per cent, respectively. For comparison: Full-time teachers had average monthly earnings of NOK 26,200, which is an increase of NOK 2,600 or 11.2 per cent.

Earnings tend to increase by age

Monthly earnings for full-time employees in publicly maintained schools tend to increase by age group. The oldest age group with persons 60 years and more had the highest wage level with NOK 30,600. About 9 per cent of the full-time employed men and 6 per cent of the full-time employed women were 60 years or older. Both men and women in this age group earn about 6 per cent more than the average for all full-time employees.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information on 64,935 full-time employees in publicly maintained schools reported to the Central Register of Government Employees in the School System per 1 October 2002.

In the spring 2002 wages settlement for employees in the central government and publicly maintained schools resulted in:

- From 1 May:

An annual increase of NOK 7,500 for each wage scale grade up to and including grade 30.

An annual increase of 3.1 per cent from grade 31 to 70.

An annual increase of NOK 14,800 for grade 71 declining to NOK 13,200 for grade 79.

- A further 1.5 per cent was set aside from 1 August 2002 in the central wage adjustment negotiations.

- Effective 1 September 2002, 2.0 per cent was set aside for local negotiations.

- According to a special agreement, all employees in publicly maintained schools receive a raise of one pay grade with effect from 1 January 2003, and another two grades from 1 August 2003.
