Annual earnings increased by 5.4 per cent

Full-time employees in transport and communication had average annual earnings of NOK 317 000 in 2002. This was an increase of NOK 16 000 or 5.4 per cent from 2001.

Employees in air transport had the highest wages, with average annual earnings of NOK 412 000, an increase of NOK 27 000 or 6.9 per cent from 2001.

Employees in sea transport had annual earnings of NOK 351 000, and employees in post and telecommunication received on an average NOK 336 000. This corresponded to increases of 7.8 per cent and 6.5 per cent respectively.

In comparison, employees in land transport had annual earnings of NOK 274 000, an increase of NOK 14 000 or 5.3 per cent.

The estimated annual earnings are based on the assumption that salaries are paid for 12 months of the year and holiday pay supplements are thus not included. Annual earnings include basic paid wages and salaries, variable additional allowances, bonuses and commissions and the like. Overtime pay and other benefits are not included. The statistics are based on information from the wages settlement, the quarterly wages index and the annual wage statistics at 1 October from two years back.

Monthly earnings up by NOK 1 200

The monthly earnings of full-time employees in transport and communication were on an average NOK 26 900, an increase of NOK 1 200 or 4.7 per cent from 1 October 2001.

Monthly earnings include basic paid salaries, variable additional allowances and bonuses, commissions and the like. As with the annual earnings, overtime pay and other benefits are not included. The percentage increase in monthly earnings can differ some from that of the annual earnings. This is because monthly earnings are calculated every 1 October, while annual earnings are compared from one calendar year to the next.

Land transport

Full-time employees in this group had average monthly earnings of NOK 23 200 at 1 October 2002. This was an increase of NOK 1 000 or 4.5 per cent from the same time 2001.

Land transport comprises scheduled road- and other passenger transport, and goods transport by road.

Scheduled road- and other passenger transport also covers railways, trams, underground, taxis and the like.

Close to 60 per cent of all full-time employees in scheduled road- and other passenger transport are drivers. They had average monthly earnings of NOK 21 300, an increase of 4.1 per cent.

Employees in transport of goods had on an average somewhat higher wages. Drivers, who also here make out the largest occupational group, had average monthly earnings of NOK 22 800. This was an increase of 6.1 per cent.

Transport-related services and the activities of travel agencies

Transport-related services include loading, unloading, storing and the like. Employees in offices, sales and services make out the largest occupational group, with average monthly earnings of NOK 23 100. This was an increase of NOK 1 900 or 9.2 per cent from 1 October 2001.

Employees in offices are also the dominant group in the travel agencies. On an average, their monthly earnings were NOK 21 900, an increase of NOK 1 200 or 6 per cent.

Employees in sales and services had average monthly earnings of NOK 21 200, an increase of 2 per cent from 1 October 2001.

Other transport activities include forwarding and broking. Employees in the offices, sales and services category had monthly earnings of NOK 24 000. This was an increase of NOK 2 200 or 9.9 per cent.

Post and telecommunications

Leaders in this group had monthly earnings of NOK 48 200, which was an increase of NOK 2 800 or 6.1 per cent. In comparison, full-time employees in offices received on an average NOK 21 800, which was an increase of NOK 1 200 or 5.7 per cent.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on a sample of enterprises with 71 2991 full-time and 17 422 part-time employees. According to preliminary figures from the National Accounts for the third quarter 2002 the statistics cover about 178 000 employees.

For some groups, the tables are somewhat less specified compared to those of previous years. This has to do with the implementation of the NOS Standard Classification of Occupations, and practical problems and obstacles arising as a consequence of this.
