Monthly wages increased by NOK 1 100

As of the first of October 2000, full-time employees in transport and communication had average monthly earnings of NOK 24 500. This was NOK 1 100 or 4.8 per cent more than the same time the year before.



Full-time employees in services relating to transport and travel agencies, post and telecommunications comprised the largest group in the industry. Average monthly earnings here increased by NOK 1 200 to NOK 25 400 as of 1 October 2000. By comparison, the monthly earnings of employees in land transport were NOK 20 500, an increase of NOK 800 or 4.3 per cent. Full-time employees in air transport had the hi ghest average monthly earnings, with NOK 30 000, an increase of NOK 1 600 or 5.8 per cent.

Land transport: 4.3 per cent increase

Average monthly earnings of full-time employees in scheduled road transport and other passenger transport amounted to NOK 19 300, an increase of NOK 800, or 4.5 per cent from the year before. Four in five were employed as drivers in the industry, with average monthly earnings of NOK 19 000. This corresponds to an increase of NOK 700 or 3.8 per cent. For managers, monthly earnings increased from NOK 27 500 to NOK 29 000 in 2000, an increase of NOK 1 500 or 5.5 per cent.

Full-time employees in goods transport had generally higher wages than their colleagues in scheduled road transport and other transport of passengers. On average they earned NOK 21 500 per month, an increase of NOK 800 or 3.9 per cent. The average monthly earnings of managers was NOK 32 900, an increase of NOK 1 400 or 4.4 per cent. The largest occupational group, drivers, received an average of NOK 21 500 per month. This corresponds to an increase of NOK 1 000, or 5.0 per cent from the same time the year before.

Water transport: 4.8 per cent increase

Full-time employees in water transport had average monthly earnings of NOK 25 800 as of October 2000. This amounted to about NOK 1 200, or 4.8 per cent more than the year before.

The dominant occupational group is technicians, machinists, mates etc. This group earned an average of NOK 28 700, an increase of NOK 1 200 or 4.5 per cent. By comparison, deckhands, machinery crew, crane and truck drivers had average monthly earnings of NOK 21 800, equal to an increase of <br/>NOK 1 000 or 4.7 per cent. Managers and professionals got monthly earnings of NOK 41 000, an increase of NOK 1 600 or 4.1 per cent.

Air transport: 5.8 per cent increase

Pilots, aviation technicians and other technicians and associated professionals earned an average of NOK 44 500 per month, an increase of NOK 3 500, or 8.5 per cent. Their colleagues in administrative positions, on the other hand, recieved average monthly earnings of NOK 39 800, an increase of NOK 2 600, or 6.9 per cent from the previous year.

One in three full-time employees occupy positions in offices, sales and customer service-related jobs. This group earned an average of NOK 22 800 per month, an increase of NOK 900, or 3.9 per cent from the year before. By comparison, craftsmen, mechanics etc. had average monthly earnings of NOK 27 800, an increase of NOK 1 900 or 7.3 per cent.

Transport-related services: 4.8 per cent increase

In October 20000, full-time employees in loading, unloading, warehousing and other transport-related services had average monthly earnings of NOK 22 700, an increase of NOK 1 000 or 4.6 per cent from 1999. Around half of all full-time employees were employed in office, sales and customer service. This occupational group had monthly earnings of NOK 20 500, an increase of just over 700 or 3.5 per cent.

Average monthly earnings for full-time employees in travel agencies were NOK 22 100, an increase of NOK 900 or 4.4 per cent from the year before.

By comparison, full-time employees in post and telecommunications had monthly earnings of <br/>NOK 27 200, an increase of NOK 1 300 or 4.8 per cent. The dominant occupational groups here were technicians and associated professionals, with monthly earnings of NOK 27 800. This was an increase of NOK 1 500 or 5.7 per cent.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises with altogether 45 122 full-time employees. According to preliminary figures from the national accounts for 3rd quarter 2000, the statistics cover around 124 000 transport and communication workers.

Corrected figures

Due to new information in connection with reporting as of 1 October 2000, the figures as of 1 October 1999 have been corrected.
