NOK 1 800 wage increase in the information sector

Full-time employees in the information sector had average monthly earnings of NOK 42 500, over-time pay excluded, in the third quarter of 2008. This was a year-on-year increase of 4.4 per cent.

The information sector is divided into two main industries: the ICT sector and the content sector. The ICT sector consists of production and sale of computers and computer parts, design, production and sale of software, and operating companies for computer networks and telephones. The content sector includes publishing companies, advertising agencies, news agencies, production of TV and radio programmes, and movies.

Higher level of earnings in the ICT sector

Percentage wise, the development of the earnings in the two sectors has been quite similar for the period 2006-2008. The ICT sector had a growth of 7 per cent from 2006 to 2007 and 4 per cent from 2007 to 2008, whereas the content sector had a corresponding increase of 6.1 per cent and 4.9 per cent. Measured in NOK, however, the picture is rather different. The level of earnings is considerably higher in the ICT sector, with average monthly earnings of NOK 44 100, compared to the level in the content sector, of NOK 38 800.

Higher education leads to higher earnings

A large proportion of the employees in the information sector are educated at universities or colleges, and this group had a higher percentage growth of earnings than the industry as a whole. The average monthly earnings of employees with a higher degree from a college or university increased by 5.2 per cent to NOK 52 200, and employees with a lower degree experienced growth of earnings of 5 per cent to NOK 44 600.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on a sample of enterprises with a total of 62 338 full-time employees as of the third quarter of 2008.

The statistics for the information sector are based on wage statistics from manufacturing, trade, communications, business activities and social and personal service activities, and are as such not based on a separate data collection process.

Average monthly earnings is the main term in the wage statistics, and is comprised of basic salary, additional variable allowances, and bonuses. Overtime pay is not included.
