Monthly earnings up NOK 1 500

Monthly earnings for full-time employees in private health and social work activities were NOK 29 600, excluding overtime pay, as at 1 October 2008; an increase of NOK 1 500 or 5.2 per cent from 2007.

The wage statistics measure wage levels on 1 October, irrespective of the time of the wage settlement. As a consequence, the result of the wage settlement for some professions may not be included in the wage statistics for this year.

Monthly earnings up 3.3 per cent for nurses

Health activities include hospital activities, medical practice and dental practice activities as well as physiotherapy treatment and day and night care. Nurses had monthly earnings of NOK 31 000 and auxiliary nurses had NOK 26 400. This was an increase of NOK 1 000 or 3.3 per cent and NOK 800 or 3.1 per cent respectively. By comparison, physicians had monthly earnings of NOK 59 800. This was an increase of NOK 1 500 or 2.6 per cent from 2007.

Monthly earnings up 6.2 per cent for pre-school teachers

Social work activities include activities such as running institutions, day care, out-of-school care and youth clubs, as well as sheltered workshops and welfare organisations. Full-time employees in social work activities had monthly earnings of NOK 27 700. This equals an increase of NOK 1 300 or 5.1 per cent from 2007. A large share of employees in social work activities are associate professionals. Pre-school teachers and child welfare officers are included in this group. Pre-school teachers had monthly earnings of NOK 28 600, corresponding to a wage increase of 6.2 per cent, or NOK 1 700.

Child welfare officers had average monthly earnings of NOK 31 100. This was an increase of NOK 1 700, or 5.8 per cent.

Average annual earnings up 5.2 per cent in private health and social work activities

In 2008, the estimated annual earnings of full-time employees in health and social work activities were NOK 350 900; an increase of 5.2 per cent or NOK 17 500 compared to 2007. For full-time employees in health activities average annual earnings were NOK 391 700, which corresponds to an increase of 5.6 per cent or NOK 20 800. By comparison, annual average earnings for employees in social work activities amounted to NOK 328 800, up NOK 16 000 or 5.1 per cent.

The statistics are based on a sample of enterprises with 50 424 employees; 28 284 full-time and 22 140 part-time. According to preliminary figures from the national accounts for the third quarter of 2008, the statistics cover about 78 300 employees in private health and social work activities.

The term “average monthly earnings” is the main term in Statistics Norway's wage statistics. Monthly earnings cover basic salaries, variable additional allowances and bonuses. Payment for overtime work is not included. The increase in monthly earnings differs somewhat from the increase in annual earnings. The monthly earnings are compared at a specific date each year, while the change in annual earnings is from one calendar year to the next. Information for two years is used in the calculation, as well as information from wage negotiations. Estimated annual earnings for the current year are preliminary until wage statistics for the following year have been compiled.
