Monthly earnings up 7 per cent

Average monthly earnings of full-time employees in fish farming amounted to NOK 33 600 at 1 October 2008, an increase of NOK 2 200 or 7 per cent from 1 October 2007.

The fish farmers themselves make up the majority of the employees in fish farming. Their average monthly earnings were NOK 31 100 in 2008, an increase of NOK 1 700 or 5.7 per cent from 2007. Average monthly earnings of managers were NOK 49 900, an increase of NOK 2 300 or 4.8 per cent.

In fish farming the underlying wage increase, or the increase in wages for identical full-time employees in the same profession and same enterprise two years in a row, was 7 per cent.

Estimated annual earnings

At 1 October 2008, all full-time employees in fish farming had estimated average annual earnings of NOK  398 900, an increase of 7.2 per cent from 2007.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on a sample of enterprises with 2 272 full-time employees. According to preliminary figures from the national accounts for the third quarter 2008, the statistics cover about 4 000 employees. Monthly earnings include basic paid salaries, variable additional allowances and bonuses, commissions and the like. Overtime pay and other benefits are not included.

Average annual earnings are estimated using information from wage statistics for two years and the wage settlements. The figures are estimated for full-time employees and do not include payment for overtime work. Estimated annual earnings figures for 2008 are preliminary until the wage statistics for 2009 are available.

Structural changes

Structural changes, as well as results from the wage negotiations, will influence the recorded changes in earnings. Among other factors this includes changes in the employment pattern, working time and profession. The development of average earnings is also influenced by the wage increase and the number of employees who join and leave the work force in the particular group of industry or switch to other industries.
