Earnings in building and construction, 1 October 2000

There were most full-time employees in activities relating to building of complete constructions. Here the average monthly earnings for full-time employees went up by NOK 1 000 to NOK 23 200 at 1 October, or 4.3 per cent. Permanent employees in building installation had NOK 23 800 in monthly earnings, which corresponds to an increase of NOK 1 000 or 4.5 per cent. Full-time employees working in building completion and renying of construction or demolition equipment with operatorhad NOK 21 600 in average monthly earnings, up NOK 900 or 4.4 per cent from the same time the year before.

Craft workers

The predominant occupational group in construction is craft workers, who had NOK 22 200 in average monthly earnings, an increase of NOK 1 000 or 4.7 per cent from the year before. Among craft workers, carpenters, plumbers, painters and electricians were among the occupational groups with the most employees.

Both plumbers and carpenters had an increase of NOK 1 000 in monthly earnings from October 1999 to October 2000, or a growth of 4.9 per cent. Monthly earnings for those groups were NOK 22 500 and NOK 21 400, respectively, at 1 October 2000. Painters and related workers, building structure cleaners and varnishers had NOK 21 400 in monthly earnings, up NOK 1 100 or 5.5 per cent from the same time the year before. Electricians, electrical and electronic equipment mechanics and fitters had the highest monthly earnings among craft workers, with NOK 23 300 at 1 October, which constituted an increase of NOK 1 200 or 5.4 per cent.

Other occupational groups

Senior officials and managers had NOK 34 800 in average monthly earnings. This was an increase of NOK 1 700 or 5.2 per cent from the year before. Full-time employees in occupations requiring higher education comprised about 10 per cent of all full-time employees in construction. Professionals had NOK 32 500 in monthly earnings, an increase of NOK 1 200 or 3.7 per cent, while technicians and associated professionals had NOK 28 100, up NOK 1 300 or 4.9 per cent. Clerks had NOK 21 400 in monthly earnings, an increase of NOK 800 or 4 per cent, while machine operators and drivers had NOK 20 900 at 1 October. That corresponds to an increase of NOK 800 or 3.9 per cent from the same time the year before.

Estimated annual earnings for fulltime employees

Based on reported information at 1 October, a calculation arrangement has been established for annual earnings. Estimated annual earnings includes contractual wages, irregular payments, bonuses, commissions, etc., but does not include payment for overtime work. The estimated annual earnings is based on there being paid wages 12 times per year, and includes only full-time employees. The calculations are based on information from the quarterly wage index and two years structural wage statistics as well as information from completed wage negotiations. The figures for estimated annual earnings for this year are preliminary until a new year of the statistics is established. All full-time employees in construction had an estimated average annual earnings in 2000 of NOK 274 645¹, an increase of NOK 12 200¹ or 4.6¹ per cent from the year before.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises which cover a total of 37 037 full-time and 1 629 part-time employees. According to preliminary figures from the national accounts for the 3rd quarter of 2000 the statistics cover approx. 107 000 employed wage earners in construction.
