Stable kindergarten fees

Kindergarten fees in Norway rose by 0.3 per cent from August 2012 to January 2013, mostly due to a rise in the private kindergarten fees.

Households’ payments to public kindergartens showed an increase of 0.1 per cent in January 2013 since the last survey in August 2012, while fees in private kindergartens went up 0.5 per cent. Fifty-three per cent of all children with day care places attend a publicly-provided kindergarten .

In Northern Norway, prices went up by 1.4 per cent from August 2012 to January 2013, while the prices in South Eastern Norway together with the Oslo and Akershus region rose by 0.4 and 0.2 per cent respectively. In Hedmark and Oppland, the public kindergarten fee increased by 0.1 per cent, while no change was measured on average (for the average municipality) in the regions of Agder/Rogaland and Western Norway. A price fall of 1.4 per cent was measured for the region of Trøndelag in the same period. In addition to increased placement fees and higher rates for additional food payments and payments for extra curricular activities, the changes must be viewed in conjunction with the change in payment regimes for some of the municipalities.

Overall, households’ payments to public kindergartens rose by 0.1 per cent from January 2012 to January 2013.

Maximum feeOpen and readClose

The maximum fee for a full-time place in a kindergarten is set by the Norwegian Parliament to an annual fee of NOK 25 630; NOK 2 330 per month. This ceiling has remained at the same nominal level from 2007 and up until now.
