Higher earnings in ocean transport

Freight income increased by 6 per cent from 2010 to 2011. At NOK 111 billion, the vessels in foreign going trade have reached the highest gross freight earnings ever.

The growth for vessels in foreign going trade was mainly a result of increased earnings from bareboat and time charter, as well as higher income from freight transport. The operating result went down to NOK 11.9 billion in 2011, despite the growth in gross freight income. The decrease in operating result was caused by higher bunker costs and other voyage-dependent costs.

Growth in income from liner freights

Freight income from liner trade increased by 26 per cent to NOK 15.7 billion from 2010 to 2011. In the same period, voyage freights and contracts of affreightment went up by 4 per cent. Freight income from bareboat increased by 67 per cent, from NOK 3 billion in 2010 to NOK 5 billion in 2011.

Drop in bulk transport

Freight income from bulk vessels decreased by 37 per cent to NOK 19.9 billion in 2011. In the same period, freight income from tankers and general cargo vessels increased by 35 and 37 per cent respectively.

Increased bunker and other voyage-dependent costs

Bunker costs and other voyage-dependent costs increased by 29 and 15 per cent respectively. Bareboat rentals increased by 32 per cent to NOK 4.2 billion in 2011. Costs from renting manned vessels fell by 12 per cent in the same period.

Increased income from coastal traffic

In 2011, coastal water traffic had an increase in turnover of 5 per cent. The growth in turnover for enterprises within coastal water traffic stems from increased income in car ferries and domestic freight transport. Turnover from car ferries increased by NOK 680 million to NOK 2.6 billion in 2011.
