Gross income for the self-employed amounted to NOK 590 000 on average in 2013. This is an increase of NOK 18 000 or 3.1 per cent from the previous year.

Personal income from wages and public pensions amounted to NOK 303 000 on average, increasing NOK 14 000 or 5.0 per cent from the previous year. Entrepreneurial income amounted to NOK 236 000; the same as in 2012. Capital income amounted to NOK 50 000, increasing NOK 4 000 from 2012.

A total of 334 000 persons reported entrepreneurial income in 2013. Of these, 272 000 persons were assessed as a sole proprietorship.

More self-employed have income from wages and public pensions

About 60 per cent of the self-employed have their main income from wages and public pensions. The number of self-employed that have their main income from wages increased by 0.8 per cent from the previous year, while the self-employed that have their main income from industries decreased by 3.5 per cent.

Growth in most industries

Compared with 2012, operating profit increased in all industries except industries in cleaning and education. Sole proprietorships from primary industries, construction, transportation and storage and human health and social work activities had an increase in operating profit of about 2 per cent from the previous year.

A self-employed person is a person who conducts business at his or her own risk. Married couples are counted as two self-employed persons when they share the taxable entrepreneurial income. One self-employed person can run more than one business. The self-employed are classified by whether their main income comes from industries or wages and pensions.
