Child welfare 1997. Preliminary figures:

More Children Receiving Help

Preliminary figures show that the number of children receiving child welfare assistance increased by 3 per cent from 1996 to 1997. It is only the number of children receiving assistance that increased, going up 5 per cent last year.

On the other hand, the number of children in child welfare custody decreased. Compared with the year before, preliminary figures show a 3 per cent decline in the number of children in the custody of the child welfare service.

Statistics Norway is now releasing the preliminary figures for child welfare services in 1997 through the publication "Hjulet" (Management and Information System for the Municipal Health and Social Welfare Service). The publication, which includes only a table, shows the number of children receiving child welfare assistance during the year per 1,000 children in the age group 0-17 years. The figures, which include all of Norway's municipalities, are preliminary and are based on unrevised information. Final figures with tables and analyses will be published in the Weekly Bulletin of Statistics, no. 36/98.
