Road traffic accidents involving personal injury, December 1997:

304 died in traffic accidents in 1997


Preliminary figures show 304 traffic deaths in 1997. That is 49 more than in 1996, but the same as in 1995. The number of deaths in 1996 was particularly low compared to previous years.
Twelve of the victims in 1997 were children under seven years of age, which is four more than the year before. Six of the 12 children in 1997 were car passengers, five were pedestrians. On the other hand, the number of victims aged 7-14 decreased from nine in 1996 to seven in 1997.

Seventy-five youths between 15 and 24 years of age were killed in traffic in 1997. That is 18 more than the year before, but four fewer than the average for 1992-1996. Fifty-four of the deceased youths were drivers or passengers.

Of those killed in 1997, 138 were between 25 and 64 years of age. Seventy-six per cent of those were drivers or passengers. For the age group 64 and older there were minor changes from the previous year. This group had six fewer fatalities than in 1996, and than the average for the five-year period 1992-1996.
