Declining number of newly established enterprises in most activities

New industrial classification implemented from January 2009

As of January 2009, a new version of Eurostat’s industrial classification, NACE, has been in use to classify enterprises and establishments. In these statistics this entails a more detailed presentation of enterprises by economic activity in tables and in StatBank.

The new standard of industrial classification is presented here .

There were fewer newly established enterprises in almost every economic activity in 2009 compared to 2008. The greatest decline was found within Real estate activities (-1 506 enterprises), Construction (- 1 230 enterprises) and Financial and insurance activities (-653 enterprises). An increasing number of newly established enterprises were only found within Wholesale and retail trade, Human health and social work activities, Accommodation and food service activities and Activities of households as employers. However, this increase amounted to no more than 276 enterprises in total.

Enterprises 1 January

The number of enterprises as of 1 January decreased by 2 per cent from 2009 to 2010 (the figure for 2010 is estimated, the final figure will be available in 2011). Most enterprises were found within Wholesale and retail trade, Construction, Real estate activities and Professional, scientific and technical activities. More than half of all enterprises were found within these activities.

The figures include all enterprises except enterprises involved in agriculture, forestry, fishing or public administration. The figures for new enterprises in 2008 have been updated compared to the quarterly statistics on new enterprises. The increase in the number of enterprises from 1 January 2009 to 1 January 2010 is partly explained by a revision in the methodology.
