22 000 new enterprises registered

22 177 new enterprises were registered in Norway during the first two quarters of 2002. 38 373 new enterprises were registered in 2001. These figures include all enterprises except public administration, agriculture, forestry and fishing.

Statistics from the Statistics Norway's Central Register of Establishments and Enterprises substantiate this development and it isthe first time this statistics are published.

New established enterprises and dead enterprises

93 per cent, 35 537 of the new enterprises in 2001 were new established enterprises. This means that the enterprise is not registered to take over an existing establishment.

In 2001, there were registered 22 392 enterprise dropouts.

By August 2002, there were about 35 000 employees in enterprises established in 2001, compared to 63 600 in all new enterprises. In other words, 45 percent of the employees in new enterprises were employed in the 7 percent of the enterprises that registered to take over an existing establishment. By December 2000, there were about 75 000 employees in enterprises that closed down or sold their establishment during 2001.

Most new sole proprietorships and within other business activities

Most new enterprises are sole proprietorships. In the first half of 2002 there were 15 000 new sole proprietorships, compared with 6 000 private limited companies. The most common economic activity among new enterprises is other business activities with about 4 400 new enterprises.

In the ICT-sector , the growth is higher than in the total population. The growth was 12 per cent in the ICT-sector compared with 7.4 per cent in the total population. Growth is the number of new enterprises in first half of 2002 in per cent of the stock of enterprises 1s tJanuary 2002. The percentage of enterprise deaths in 2001 is 15 per cent for the ICT-sector compared with 8 per cent in the total population.

The growth is also highest in central areas.
