Rise in number of enterprises

The number of newly established enterprises continues to increase. In 2012, a total of 51 148 enterprises were established; an increase of 9 per cent compared to the previous year.

The number of newly established private limited companies increased by 56.3 per cent from 2011 to 2012 and the number of sole proprietorships decreased by 1.7 per cent in the same period. Nine out of ten newly established enterprises were private limited liability companies or sole proprietorships.

Most economic activities had more newly established enterprises in 2012 compared to 2011. The largest growth was found within Construction (20.4 per cent), Education (18.0 per cent) and Real estate activities (16.6 per cent).

The variation in the number of newly established enterprises in the period 2001-2012 can mainly be attributed to the variation in newly established limited liability companies (figure 1).

Enterprises as of 1 January

The number of enterprises as of 1 January increased by 3.1 per cent from 2011 to 2012. Most enterprises as of 1 January 2012 were found within Wholesale and retail trade (14.3 per cent of total) and Construction (14.1 per cent). For 1 January 2013, the preliminary figure shows no significant change from 2012 (the final figure will be available in 2014).

The figures include all enterprises except enterprises involved in agriculture, forestry, fishing or public administration. The figures for new enterprises in 2012 have been updated compared to the quarterly statistics on new enterprises.
