42 600 courses with 470 700 participants

The popular education organisations arranged 42 600 courses with 470 700 participants and 1 400 000 lessons in 2011. Folkeuniversitetet - Adult Education Association accounted for 28 per cent of all courses and 35 per cent of all participants.

The average number of participants per course for all organisations was 11. The Adult Education Association of The Christian Democratic Party of Norway had the highest average number of participants per course, namely 30. The Academic Association for Adult Education and Folkeuniversitetet - Adult Education Association had on average 19 and 14 participants per course respectively.

The Adult Education Association of Solidarity had the highest average number of lessons per course and per participants, 124 lessons per course and 22 lessons per participant. Folkeuniversitetet - Adult Education Association had 38 lessons per course and 3 lessons per participant.

Women were in the majority

Fifty-six per cent of all participants in 2011 were female, and most of them were in the age group 50 and above. The age group of 50 and above accounted for 42 per cent of all participants. The age groups 14-29 and 30-49 accounted for 26 and 31 per cent respectively.

The Sami Adult Education Association had the highest proportion of women, with 79 per cent, while The Rural Association of Adult Education had the lowest proportion of women; 30 per cent.

Almost half of all participants attended aesthetic and handicraft courses

There were 18 100 courses with 219 300 participants within aesthetics and handicraft, while there were only 234 courses with 600 participants within goods and services courses. Women were in the majority in most subjects.

Men and women largely followed the traditional pattern in their selection of subjects. Men had a clear majority in science, industrial and technical subjects, with 81 per cent of all participants. In contrast, women made up 72 per cent in goods and services, 68 per cent in social sciences and 64 per cent in health, social care and sports.

Most participants in Oslo and Hordaland

With regard to the counties, Oslo had the highest number of courses and participants. The popular education organisations arranged 4 700 courses with 57 300 participants in Oslo. Hordaland county had the second highest number of courses; 4 200, and participants; 46 700 in 2011.

At the bottom, the counties of Aust Agder and Finnmark both had the least courses and number of participants out of all the counties.
