There was a decline in activity by popular education organisations from 2005 to 2006. Such organisations held a total of 39 100 courses and 1 398 000 lessons last year, and the number of participants was 505 800.

Popular education associations experienced a 9 per cent decline in courses, a 15 per cent decline in participants and a 5 per cent decline in tuition periods in 2006. The most popular education organisation in Norway, Folkeuniversitetet Adult Education Centre, arranged 1 200 fewer courses and had a 24 per cent decline in participants in 2006 compared with 2005.

Women in majority

91 per cent of the women were reported by age. 25 per cent of the women were aged 14-29, 39 per cent were aged 30-49 and 36 per cent were aged 50 and above. 90 per cent of the men were reported by age. 27 per cent of the men were aged 14-29, 36 per cent were aged 30-49 and 37 per cent were aged 50 and above.

Aesthetic and handicraft courses accounted for 58 per cent of all lessons by popular education organisations in 2006, and 44 per cent of the participants attended these courses. Women accounted for 60 per cent of the participants, and 47 per cent were aged 50 and above.

44 700 offered examination

In total, 44 700 participants, or 9 per cent, were offered examination. 13 200 were offered public examination, 22 800 were offered another valid exam or certificate and 3 000 were offered vocational examination. In addition, 5 700 were offered internal tests. The statistics specify the percentage offered examination, but does not have any information on the number of participants who took an exam or the results.
