In autumn 2008, there were 3 059 primary and lower secondary schools in Norway; a reduction of 43 from the previous year. There has been a reduction in both public and private schools.

The number of public schools decreased by 40, and the number of private schools decreased by 3. By 2008 there were 154 private schools in Norway. The number of pupils has also decreased in the last year. In total there were 614 000 pupils in primary and lower secondary schools; a reduction of 2 400 pupils from the previous year. The number of pupils in private schools was 15 400, or 2.5 per cent of all pupils.

More pupils received additional language training in Norwegian

Nearly41 000 pupils, or 7 per cent of all pupils, received additional language training in Norwegian. That corresponds to an increase of almost 1 000 pupils. More than 22 000 pupils received native language training and/or a bilingual education. Somali, Urdu and Arabic were the most popular languages, with 2 570, 2 440 and 1 913 pupils respectively.
