Reduction in number of schools continues
The number of primary and lower secondary schools continues to fall, while the number of private schools is on the rise.
Traditionally there have been few private schools in Norway. In 1985, the number of private schools was 38, or 1 per cent of all primary and lower secondary schools. The number of private schools increased gradually until a new school policy resulted in a sharp rise in private schools from 88 in 2000 to 145 in 2005. With the change of government in 2005, this policy was stopped, resulting in only one more private school in 2006.
There are 619 038 pupils in primary and lower secondary education in Norway, 2 per cent of these attend private schools.
