Increase in private schools
In the past five years there has been a 65 per cent increase in private schools in Norway. The number of private school pupils is also increasing but not as much as the increase in schools.
In 2001 the number of private schools were 88. In 2005 there were 145 private schools, an increase of 65 per cent. The number of students in private schools is enhanced with 32 per cent, from 10 053 in 2001 to 13 269 in 2005.
There are 3 160 primary and lower secondary schools and the total number of students is 619 640. Participation in primary and lower secondary schools is compulsory.
