3 000 primary and lower secondary schools

As of 1 October 2011, there were 3 000 primary and lower secondary schools in Norway. A total of 172 were private schools, whereas the rest were local authority, county or state schools.

A total of 1 749 were primary schools, 758 schools were combined primary and lower secondary, and 493 schools were lower secondary. Forty per cent of the schools had 100-300 pupils, 33 per cent had less than 100 pupils, and 27 per cent had more than 300 pupils.

From the school-year 2011/12, special schools are no longer counted separately, but instead included in the total number of schools. The number of schools and pupils is therefore not directly comparable with previous years.

9 per cent of all pupils receive special education

As of 1 October 2011, there were 614 734 pupils in primary and lower secondary schools. Nine per cent of all pupils received special education. Eleven per cent of pupils in lower secondary schools and 7 per cent of pupils in primary schools received special education.

87 per cent chose official form of Norwegian “bokmål”

Almost 87 per cent of all pupils have chosen the official form of Norwegian “bokmål”. Approximately 13 per cent chose the other official form of Norwegian, “nynorsk”. A total of 855 pupils chose Sami.
