Steady decline in number of participants

In 2008, 16 500 participants attended short courses at Norwegian folk high schools, a decrease of about 2 100 participants, or 11 per cent compared to the previous year. Throughout the last five years, the participants attending short courses have decreased by 24 per cent.

As in previous years, women are in the majority among those attending short courses. Most of the participants are 50 years old or above, and aesthetic subjects and handicraft are still the most popular courses. The number of people attending short courses with a foreign citizenship has dropped by 32 per cent compared to 2007. Russians are in the majority among the participants with a foreign citizenship.
